The top cryptocurrencies by market cap are led by Bitcoin and Ethereum in this snapshot, with Tether third. Rankings move with price and supply data, so confirm against a live page before relying on them.

If you are still learning how prices and listings come together, start with how do crypto markets work, then return here to read the rankings with the right caveats.

When you need a quick ranking

A ranked list answers one question: which assets have the largest market value right now. The three coins below are the ones this snapshot supports with firm figures, and the end of the top 10 shows how fragile a ranking can be.

Bitcoin at number one

Bitcoin ranked first on CoinMarketCap with a market cap of $1.62T at a price of $81,007.36, backed by 20.1M BTC in circulation. The aggregator Slickcharts, updated 10/28/2026, 2:09:00 AM, showed Bitcoin at $1,624,426,746,469 with a 60.02% share and a price of $80,798.78.

The two prices differ slightly because each site samples the market at its own moment. Bitcoin suits readers who want a benchmark: other coins are usually described relative to it, and its share of the whole market is the figure most dashboards put first.

Ether at number two

Ethereum’s asset, ether (ETH), ranked second on CoinMarketCap at $287.78B with a price of $2,359.40 and 122.17M ETH in circulation. Slickcharts listed it at $287,323,925,707, a 10.62% share and a price of $2,351.83. CoinGecko put Ethereum dominance at 10.3%.

The gap between Ethereum and Bitcoin is large, which is why a simple top 10 table understates how concentrated the market is at the very top.

Tether and the rest of the top 10

Tether (USDT) held third place on CoinMarketCap with a market cap of $181.56B at $0.9985 and 181.82B USDT in circulation.

The bottom of the top 10 is where lists part company. Slickcharts placed Hyperliquid (HYPE) tenth at $20,750,248,792, a 0.77% share. CoinDesk, which ranks by market cap using real-time market data, showed WhiteBIT Coin (WBT) in tenth place at $24.21B and a price of $82.52. If a tenth-place name matters to you, check it on the site you actually follow, because the order near the cutoff changes quickly.

Slickcharts refreshes its data once every five minutes, so even a printed top 10 is stale within the hour. Use it for orientation, not for timing.

When you need to check the maths

Market cap is a size measure, not a price, and a coin with a low price can outrank a coin with a high one. Two inputs decide it: how many units count as circulating, and which price is used.

Price multiplied by circulating supply

CoinMarketCap states that it calculates valuations from the total circulating supply of an asset multiplied by the currency reference price. Its total cryptocurrency market capitalization is the sum of all cryptocurrencies listed on the site, and its prices come directly from many exchanges based on their pairs.

Read Tether’s row to see the formula at work. Its circulating supply of 181.82B USDT and a price of $0.9985 produce the $181.56B shown, so for a coin priced near one dollar the cap and the supply sit close together. For Bitcoin, 20.1M BTC at $81,007.36 gives the $1.62T on the page.

Circulating versus fully diluted supply

Circulating supply counts the units available in the market today. Fully diluted valuation, which CoinGecko offers in its table as FDV and Market Cap / FDV options, values a project using supply beyond what is currently circulating.

For large, established coins the two views are usually close enough that the headline cap is a fair guide. For newer projects, compare Market Cap with FDV and read the project’s own supply documentation before treating the headline cap as the whole picture.

When two sites disagree

Rankings differ between CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap because each chooses its own coverage, price inputs and supply counts. Small differences at the top and bigger differences further down are normal.

Writing each figure down with its snapshot date makes it easy to compare against a live page later.

Coverage differs

CoinGecko reports that it is tracking 22,522 cryptocurrencies, while CoinMarketCap showed 8088 assets in its listing. Because CoinMarketCap’s total is the sum of what it lists, a site that lists more assets can report a different total.

Totals and dominance differ

On the snapshot date CoinMarketCap reported a global cap of $2.71T, up 1.11% over the last day. CoinGecko reported $2.8 Trillion, a 0.8% change in the last 24 hours. Bitcoin dominance was 58% on CoinGecko against 60.03% on CoinMarketCap.

Neither is wrong. They measure slightly different universes with slightly different inputs, so a dominance percentage is only meaningful with the site name attached.

Lists differ at the edge

Because aggregators sample at different times, the order near the bottom of the list is the least dependable part of any list. CapTrader’s ten-largest article states plainly that its ranking is based on CoinMarketCap data retrieved on 03/24/2026, which is the right habit: name the source and the date beside every list you publish or save.

When you are sorting coins by size

Cap tiers are relative bands within a ranking, not legal categories. Check how any tier label is defined before comparing two lists that use the same words.

Large cap

Large caps are the coins at the top of the table, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and Tether in this snapshot. They suit readers who want assets with the most visible pricing and the most data to compare across sites. Their caps still move with price every day, so a large cap does not mean a stable one.

Mid cap and small cap

Mid caps sit below the leaders and small caps further down still. In both bands rankings shuffle more often, and the same coin can fall in a different tier on a different site because coverage and supply counts differ.

  • Choose mid caps when you want exposure beyond the leaders but still want a coin that appears consistently on several data sites.
  • Treat small caps as a research task: read the supply figures and check the coin on both aggregators before relying on a single rank.
  • Avoid tier labels from a source that does not state its cut-offs.

Micro cap

A micro cap crypto is a token near the bottom of the ranking, among the thousands that aggregators such as CoinGecko track. With so little value attached, a ranking position says very little, and a single listing can be the only data point available.

A fiat coin used only to illustrate the idea of value: a ranking multiplies price by units in circulation and says nothing about quality.

If you plan to trade at this end of the market, read what is slippage in crypto first, because the price you see and the price you receive can differ. Only treat micro caps as money you can afford to lose.

Checking a small token on a phone is quick, but a headline cap alone is a thin basis for a decision.

When you are judging safety

A higher market cap does not make a coin safer. It tells you how large the market value is, not whether the project is sound.

What cap does and does not tell you

CapTrader notes that market cap alone says little about a coin’s long-term development or actual usage, and that it is not a reliable indicator of quality, usage or future potential. That matches how the number is built: price multiplied by circulating supply contains no information about security, adoption or governance.

A calculator sits among colored pencils, highlighters and an eraser in a black mesh holder.

The practical use is as a first filter. A large cap means more sites quote the coin and the figures are easier to cross-check, but it should sit alongside project documentation and supply details. Frequently asked questions

Question Answer
How often do these rankings change? Constantly. Slickcharts updates its market cap data once every five minutes, and CoinMarketCap showed its global cap up 1.11% over the last day. Any single list is a snapshot.
Is a ranked list in a blog post still current? Only as of its stated date. A ranking built from CoinMarketCap data retrieved on 03/24/2026 describes that moment, not today.
Why is Tether ranked third if its price barely moves? Ranking is by market cap, which reflects supply multiplied by price. On CoinMarketCap Tether’s $181.56B comes from 181.82B USDT at $0.9985, so its position says nothing about growth.
Which data site should I follow? Pick one and stay with it when tracking changes over time, because totals and dominance figures differ between sites. Cross-check on the other when a figure looks unusual.
